Camping Recipe: Dutch Oven Cobbler

  • 4 tbsps butter
  • 3/4 c. all purpose flour
  • 3/4 c. Sugar 
  • 1 tbsp sugar 
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 2 tsps vanilla extract
  • 1 (16 oz) package frozen mixed berries
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions:

  1. Start by defrosting the frozen berries just set them out on your Rv’s counter. About an hour before you’re ready to start cooking.
  2. Build a strong fire and spread out the coals. You’ll need around 25 calls for this recipe.
  3. Preheat the Dutch oven to around 350°.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the flour 1/4 cup of sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir until thoroughly blended.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the milk and vanilla. Then whisk together into the dry ingredients until a smooth batter forms.
  6. Melt the butter in the Dutch oven
  7. Pour the batter into the Dutch oven and top with berries. Then sprinkle 1 teaspoon of sugar evenly over the top and replace the lid on the Dutch oven.
  8. Spread out 17 coals underneath the Dutch oven to create an even cooking space and place eight of the hot coals on the lid.
  9. Bake for around 45 minutes to an hour, or until the fruit is bubbling and thick in the batter is beginning to brown.
  10. To prevent the better from burning, be sure to turn the oven and the lid in opposite directions around every 15 minutes or so while baking.
  11. Remove the Dutch oven from the heat and allow to cool before serving. Top with ice cream or whipped cream in addition to chopped nuts for a delicious breakfast or after dinner treat.
